WorldWideWeb - Executive Summary

The WWW project merges the techniques of information retrieval and hypertext to make an easy but powerful global information system.

The project started with the philosophy that much academic information should be freely available to anyone. It aims to allow information sharing within internationally dispersed teams, and the dissemination of information by support groups.

Presentation

Welcome, it's a pleasure to have you there. Here is a personal website, as there are millions of other ones. You may stay as much time as you wish, one minute, one hour, one day, you decide. Indeed there is no essential reason to visit this very website rather than another one, it's an infinitesimal part of cyberspace. The Internet becomes a gigantic Library of Babel, in 30-40 years there will be personal websites developed during a whole life, and psychologists will even more cogitate on human beings' complexity.

What is there on the website?

OK, it's a bit chaotic, the only common point between all of the approached topics is that there are -or were- interesting to the webmaster. It is somehow akin to a circus. A sublunar circus, if you want, with a little something for everybody. Hence, here is a quick table to illustrate the main patterns:

Education
Progression
Sport
Childhood
Creativity
Orgasm
Dreams
Imagination
Music
Psychology
Consciousness
Psychotropics
Memory
Physics
Mathematics
Information

Programming
Self-reproduction

Evolution

The site gently grows up, based on the principle that equilibrium is death. It is a long-term project. If you come back in a few months, maybe some pages will have been updated, or new ones will have been created. Or even new themes. Even perhaps a blog. Nah, no blog.

Recently created pages are highlighted in green, recently updated ones in blue, and hovered external links in purple.

NTFAQ (not that frequently asked questions)

If something on the site isn't crystal-clear (is it possible?), an explanation may lie here.

Why "submoon"? Why "freeshell"? Why "org"? "submoon" because for Aristotle, the supralunar world is stable and perfect, while the sublunar world is uncertain and chaotic.
"freeshell" because i have a free shell. Nice.
"org" because here i have nothing to sell.
Why this site? Isn't it a useless work? Why not? Honestly, it's not really some work, rather a game.
Why is the "riddles" page entitled "Ni plaisanterie ni paradoxe" (Neither joke nor paradox)? Because it contains neither joke nor paradox?. It is a verse from Lettres du Voyant by Arthur Rimbaud.
Why are the persons sharing the cake among themselves named Thierry, Hugo, and Caroline? Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, aka thc, is hemp's (and hence space cake's) psychoactive molecule.
Why do the mathematical riddles have mushroomy names? Because I love mushrooms. They are fascinating.

OOT Temple de l'Eau Prison Break 1x12
Mushrooms, like water, convey people.
Left, Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Right, Prison Break 1x12.
Why are the protagonists of "a story with X's and O's" named Leo and Georges? Leo stands for Leopold Kronecker, Georges stands for Georg Cantor.
Why is the "I am You" riddle called "trizaba"? Monster Aha, to understand that, you have to read Monster, by Naoki Urasawa. The story is basically about a doctor promised to a brillant future ; he is really gifted, moreover he's gonna marry the director's daughter. One day he saves a child who got a bullet in the head. Then his life changes radically, as he is suspected of assassination by a BKA agent who types on a virtual keyboard to memorize events.
Why is the "ghostly" riddle entitled "Powerful Magical Evil"? These adjectives are Mush Mushi's lyrics, by Infected Mushroom, on the Classical Mushroom album.
Why are the magic squares blue and red and not, say, green and red? See here.
Why is Xtratego's first version named "Balthazar's Scarlet Standard"? Why is the second one named "Living Daylight"? Tthe answer to the first question is located in the book The Battlepits of Krarth. There is a mage, Balthazar, whose emblem is a scarlet standard. As simple as that. Regarding the second question, please have a look at Goldeneye's multiplayer mode.
Why isn't Xtratego continued? Someday, maybe, it will be continued.
Why is x named x, where x ∈ {N-login, laer, vertical, rr, Xtratego, ipridi}? N-login was first intented to be named Restricted Area, then No Pasarán, and eventually has been named N-login, because it's a program emulating a login system and the other names were too long. laer is the acronym of lost alphametics easy recovery, because it's a program solving alphametics problems by a bruteforce method. vertical is a very tiny calculator. rr is a russian roulette. Xtratego is a portmanteau of extra and stratego. Finally, ipridi deals with the so-called iterated prisoner's dilemna, hence the name.
Why does the "kewl" section exist? It is completely immoral. There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral site. Sites are good, or bad. That is all :)
Why, in this case, do seemingly illegal behaviours appear sometimes to be encouraged? Well, "when law and morality contradict each other, the citizen has the cruel alternative of either losing his moral sense or losing his respect of the law" (Frédéric Bastiat).
Why this first step at the test? If you think about it for 2 seconds, it's obvious. The voice is Michael Weiss' one, from the Pretender's pilot.
Why isn't the "optical illusions" page titled "Eye Candy"? Sounds great. It would be incorrect with respect to Happy Tree Friends.
Eye Candy
Toothy the purple squirrel beaver
Why is the [future] section related to physics entitled "Jingling Physics"? Because physics is for me an official money source, nothing more.
Why "Susy" and not "Suzy"? Figure it yourself.
Why, in the text "The future", is 'cue-tip' translated into french by 'coup de pouce' ('quick help')? OK, this is a private joke ; there are other ones...
Why aren't the old [text|program] versions anterior to the current ones directly available on the site?
Caminante, son tus huellas
el camino, y nada más ;
caminante, no hay camino,
se hace camino al andar.
Al andar se hace camino,
y al volver la vista atrás
se ve la senda que nunca
se ha de volver a pisar.
Caminante, no hay camino,
sino estelas en la mar.
-- Antonio Machado (1917)
When a new version is available, it is considered as more relevant ; indeed previous versions are systematically deleted from the server to optimize disk space. Moreover the underlying purpose is to show the vital interest to sometimes get rid of some ideas ("mental / moral uncluttering"). However the visitor desiring an history, for any reason, should find it on archive.org or in Google's cache.
Why hasn't my e-mail / message been answered? It's almost two weeks now! The incoming e-mails / messages are processed approximately once every month according to pseudo-Poissonian statistics, meaning you may have to wait more than two months before getting an answer. A side effect is that it should encourage you to refine your message, if you would like to.
Why, at the era of Web 2.0, or 3.0, isn't it even possible to write commentaries visible to other internauts in order to create a potentially enthusiastic and constructive exchange? Let's think about it. For now, if this reality is disturbing you, you may act on it by adequate acts. Reflection, action...

Background

The website is born in 2001. At the beginning the goal wasn't to create a personal site but rather a kind of artistic space. After some vigorous discussions the initial project was given up, the content renamed, repainted, and moved. The new idea was to present N-login, a little software. Since then, things have changed...
